The First Advent Candle
This is the candle, the first that we light,
The candle for what you say?
The candle for that first Advent night,
When night was turned into day.
It is the first of four we light,
They stand for Peace, Love, Hope and Joy.
To shine out clear and shine out bright,
To herald the birth of a boy.
The first reminds us to think of peace,
That the Christ-child’s birth will bring.
All wrapped in blankets or inside a fleece,
of who’s coming the Angels sing.
Its colour is a purple hue,
A symbol of waiting, restraint.
For a prophecy that was brought to you,
Of the birth of a Heavenly Saint.
It goes on a wreath – full five in all,
That will hang from the church’s rafter.
As we wait for the birth in that lonely stall,
And the promise of heaven thereafter.
We shall light the rest as the weeks go by,
In order, one by one.
Till all five are lit and the flames fly high,
For the Advent Season’s begun.
